So...PART I was the set up...and here we are with PART II, Bunkasai Day one! This is a two day festival, with the first day being for the students and teachers only, and the second day open to the public. So Friday was GO time for all the students to see the result of all their hard work and run through everything before the BIG crazy day on Saturday.
I started off my day in the best way possible, with a MR DONUT jam-filled amazing croissant donut and some nice black coffee in my favorite SAKURA Starbucks mug :)
at 9am we kicked off the fun with the Opening Ceremony where all the students came into the gym with their class shirts on and introduced their theme for the festival. I always love seeing the creativity in the T-shirts and the unity it shows within the homerooms. You think we could get American kids to sit this properly?? rhetorical question. no way.
Each homeroom makes a banner with their theme on it and it is dramatically unraveled in front of everyone. The best one was the 3B class who had christmas lights on their banner! HAHA
once the opening ceremony commences, Bunkasai officially begins!! From 10am-3pm the students have the day free to work their designated classrooms, roam around, check out the other classes, and see the performances on stage.
My first stop was the Library committees table of awesome hand made journals, bookmarks, keychains, etc. Aren't they amazing!?
Next stop was 1A...the first year class that will be going to Torrance next year!
They set their classroom up into three "game stations" representing different countries. How cute is that?!
These boys from 3H reppin their shirts that looked familiar to KITH TREATS designs, but when I asked them if thats where they got the idea from they were like huhhh??
a lot of the classrooms set up their place like a restaurant, which is so cute, and 3I made it an aloha paradise and sold icecream.
How awesome are those CHURRO t-shirts!? I would totally buy one.
2A was so funny...they sold popsicles and juice and had the boys dressed up as girl.
Ok here comes the most impressive room of the day...3E's SPINNING TEACUPS RIDE!!!! Which they called "coffee cups" for some reason haha. I was so impressed by this feat of building a man-powered spinning teacups ride in their class. WOW.
I went on it and it really felt like the teacups ride!!!
A few classes did haunted houses which had lines of 20+ kids in it!
3D sold Keema curry and it was really bomb!
How cute is the design of this class? Loved all the balloons and cheerful colors.
I also got some bracelets made by the art club...they all say "ICHIKASHI" on it, which is the school's nickname. Pretty amazing souvenier for $1!!
A special award needs to be given to 3B class, who put on a FULL PERFORMANCE of Sound of Music!!! Like, a straight up 80 minutes show with singing, dancing, props, lights, music...the whole enchilada. They even made fans with quotes from the musical on it!! Keeping that forever.
Of course the brass band performed in the afternoon and did an incredible job as usual!
The light music club also took to the stage and you can see one of the 2A students here, Ajia, dressed as a girl and singing rock and roll! HAHHA.
two of my awesome coworkers!
The Dance team also took to the stage and killed it!
Ok so 3I wins for my favorite shirt of Bunkasai!! HAHA...it was drawn by one of the students and is a picture of their teachers face! How amazing is that. It looks just like him which makes it even better. I want to make this design into a sticker and put it everywhere!
The S (sports focused) classes always do a dance...a long crazy dance...and here is 3S doing their 30 minute routine!!
And...at 3pm I walked into 2A and found a few students like this...a sure sign of a good day! Things wrapped up smoothly and the kids went to practice, or went home and got some rest before day TWO of the big event!
I had so much fun roaming the halls and seeing as many of the classrooms as I could. So proud to work here!
