A lot of things have happened this week.

Big things. Painful things. Scary things. Shocking things. It's the sorrow of countries far away and the sorrow that hits close to home. Most of it I can't wrap my mind around.

In the midst of my lack of understanding and the suffering I see on the faces of so many people, these beautiful words penned by Jonathan Edwards ring so loud and clear. I am reminded of the greatness, the glory, the victory of God and how the deepest ache is our hearts point towards our ultimate destiny - eternity with Him.

God is the highest good of the reasonable creature; and the enjoyment of him is the only happiness with which our souls can be satisfied. To go to heaven, fully to enjoy God, is infinitely better than the most pleasant accommodations here. Fathers and mothers, husbands, wives, or children, or the company of earthly friends, are but shadows; but the enjoyment of God is the substance. These are but scattered beams; but God is the sun. These are but streams; but God is the ocean.
